Asbestos in Cement Panels & Roof Sheets
Asbestos surveys are essential for detecting any asbestos health hazards in cement and cement board building materials
Asbestos fibres can be extremely hazardous to health, causing pleural plaques and incurable cancers such as mesothelioma. As such, it is very important to conduct asbestos surveys so that you can quickly identify the presence of these fibres, manage the risk or have them removed whenever necessary.
We provide a range of Asbestos Management Survey, Asbestos Refurbishment & Demolition Surveys and Asbestos Sampling Services for all types of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) including types of cements and cement based building products such as cement based roofing panels and building panels.
Asbestos in Cement Based Building Products
Which types of cement need to be tested?
Asbestos can be present in almost all kinds of cement, including plastic cement, joint cement, furnace cement, finishing cement and bonding cement. These cements may be present on walls, floors or ceilings, and they can be used both indoors and outside of a property. Asbestos was chosen as a material for use in cement because it was long lasting, able to adhere to numerous different surfaces and form strong bonds between them, and because of its highly fire retardant properties.
The fibres can be safe when they are left undisturbed, but they can be released by any kind of abrasion. This abrasion might be deliberate (for instance, building works that involve cement bonds being broken with a pickaxe whilst the contractor has no idea that the bonds contain hazardous fibres) or it might be the result of a non-human-driven process such as weather damage. An expert surveyor will be able to detect the presence of the fibres in all of the cements on your properties, to advise about how to ensure that they comply with current legislation, and to arrange for the safe and legal removal of the cements where necessary.
The need for high quality asbestos surveys
We provide the highest of standards in asbestos surveys, and we will can help our clients comply fully with current legislation.
We also offer an impartial Asbestos Removal Project Management Service where we use third party independent contractors to ensure that any AMC’s, rubble, old insulation boards, and contaminated loose material is disposed of safely and legally (as you may know, it is not permissible to dispose of these hazardous materials in usual domestic waste collections, or in skips).
If any cements on your property are found to contain asbestos, we will be able to formulate the best legal strategy for managing and (where necessary) advise on removing and replacing the cements so as to ensure that they do not present any hazards to health.
